In terms of philanthropy, the firm's founder, William Cummings and his wife, Joyce, have recently been among the nation's largest charitable donors. Their gifts to Cummings Foundation now total more than $700 million. Most Cummings Properties buildings are owned by and operated exlusively for the benefit of Cummings Foundation.

Cummings Foundation, in turn, operates the not-for-profit New Horizons assisted living communities, and contributes to numerous causes. In Beverly, MA the foundation recently donated $1 million for the new Douglas Stephens Teen Center at the YMCA of the North Shore. Its largest financial commitment was $50 million to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

$38 million in 2014 grants
In 2014, Cummings Foundation made 100 eastern Massachusetts, grants of $100,000 each, plus additional larger grants to local organizations totaling another $10 million. The larger community grants included $2 million in support of the rebuilding program for the Jamie McKeown Boys and Girls Club of Woburn, and a $1 million grant supporting a program of Holocaust and genocide education at Salem State University. Far beyond Massachusetts, the Foundation has also committed $15 million, supporting the work of Dr. Paul Farmer of Partners in Health, in Rwanda..
